What is an ultrafiltration membrane?

Ultrafiltration membrane is a polymer semipermeable membrane used in the ultrafiltration process to separate polymer colloids or suspended particles of a certain size from the solution. It uses a tough, thin and selectively permeable permeable membrane to remove particles and pollutants in the water. It is driven by pressure, with a pore size of 1 to 100 nm, and is an asymmetric membrane type. The pore density is about 10/cm, and the operating pressure difference is 100 to 1000 kPa. It is suitable for removing colloidal particles and macromolecules, and can separate solutions with a concentration of less than 10%.

How does the ultrafiltration membrane work?

Ultrafiltration membranes usually use pressure as a driving force to allow raw water to enter the membrane element and filter impurities through the pore size. The filtration methods of ultrafiltration membranes can be roughly divided into two types, internal pressure filtration and external pressure filtration, which can effectively filter impurities in the water. The incoming water is mainly filtered according to the pore size, and the pore size is usually between 0.001-0.02 microns, which means that the ultrafiltration membrane can only filter impurities larger than its pore size, but cannot filter impurities smaller than the membrane pore size.

 

What are the categories of ultrafiltration membranes?

1). Cross Flow UF Filtration

In tangential flow filtration, the sample flow flows horizontally on the membrane surface and is filtered in a direction perpendicular to the membrane surface (i.e., filtered at a tangential angle), so that the sample can circulate with the flow rate and also flush the membrane surface, avoiding the accumulation of large molecules on the membrane surface and preventing concentration polarization from reducing the flow rate, thereby maintaining a stable flow rate, effectively filtering and extending the life of the filter membrane.

In terms of function, tangential flow filtration can simultaneously perform concentration and diafiltration, and the experimental and mass production tangential flow equipment share parameters, which can easily expand the production scale.

2) Direct flow UF fltration.

Generally, the traditional filtration method is direct flow filtration (DFF; dead-end filtration), in which the sample flow flows vertically on the membrane surface, allowing small molecules to pass through the filter membrane. However, large molecules tend to accumulate on the membrane surface to form a filter cake layer. As the filtration time increases, the thickness of the filter cake layer will increase, causing the filter membrane to be blocked, resulting in a decrease in flow rate and molecular separation effect, and shortening the service life of the filter membrane.

What does ultrafiltration membranes remove?

Ultrafiltration can effectively remove larger particles and pollutants in water, for example:

A. Food industry: Ultrafiltration membrane can effectively filter milk or whey...

B. Medical field: Ultrafiltration membrane can filter enzymes, viruses, bacteria, nucleic acids, special proteins and other impurities.

C. Biochemical industry, drugs extracted from animals and plants, colloids, rust, suspended matter, silt, endotoxins, macromolecular organic matter and other impurities can also be removed by ultrafiltration membrane.

D. In industrial production: Electrophoretic paint can also be intercepted and used for electrophoretic paint recovery, plastics, silica, sediments.

 

What does ultrafiltration membrane not remove?

Although ultrafiltration membrane can filter many impurities, some impurities with smaller pore size than ultrafiltration membrane cannot be filtered, such as:

Water alkali, odor, heavy metals, calcium, magnesium ions and trace elements, etc. These substances usually need to be treated with reverse osmosis membrane, nanofiltration membrane or ion exchange resin to be removed.
