Horizontal Steam Sterilizer Autoclave is a sterilization machine that features a chamber oriented horizontally which opens from the front. The sterilization process in a horizontal autoclave involves steam under pressure which effectively kills microorganisms present on various instruments and equipment. Preparation:
Clean and wrap items to be sterilized.

Loading:
Load items into the chamber with enough space between them to allow steam to circulate properly.

Cycle Selection:
Select the sterilization cycle that matches the properties of the materials you are processing.

Monitoring:
Ensure the autoclave’s temperature and pressure levels and the cycle duration stay within operational parameters.

Unloading:
Items must be allowed to cool down before they can be safely removed from the chamber.

Sterilization: It is subjected this steam at high pressure for a certain amount of time typically 15-30 minutes, according to the type of load.
Depressurization & Drying: Following the sterilization process after the sterilization process, pressure is let go gradually. Certain vertical autoclaves that are more advanced offer partial drying, however full drying is more prevalent for horizontal models.
Unloading: After cooling after cooling, the sterilized substances are taken away.
Loading:
Items for sterilization are placed in the vertical chamber starting from the top. Trays and baskets are typically used to stack items.
Heating & Steam Generation:
The chamber’s water (or an integral reservoir) gets heated up, producing steam.
Pressurization:
After the chamber has reached the temperature set (typically 121degC-134degC) then the pressure starts to build upwards (usually around 15-30psi) to ensure that the steam is completely saturated.
Considerations and Limitations
Space Requirements:
While more compact than some industrial autoclaves, horizontal sterilizers still require sufficient floor space to accommodate their larger chamber size.
High Initial Cost:
Horizontal pressure steam sterilizers tend to be more expensive than smaller, vertical models due to their larger capacity and more advanced features.
Energy Consumption:
With larger capacities, horizontal units may consume more energy than smaller models, leading to higher operational costs.
Maintenance:
Due to their size and complexity, horizontal autoclaves may require more maintenance and professional service, especially in high-use environments.
