What is the difference between high pressure homogenizer and microfluidizer?

1. Principle analysis:

High pressure homogenizer: The high pressure homogenizer is mainly composed of a high pressure homogenization chamber and a pressurizing mechanism. The material is sucked in and pressurized by the plunger pump, and enters the valve group with adjustable pressure under the action of the plunger. After passing through the flow-limiting gap (working area) of a specific width, the material that loses pressure instantly sprays out at a very high flow rate and collides with the collision ring of one of the valve components, producing a cavitation effect: extremely high energy is accumulated in the material compressed by the plunger, and it loses pressure instantly when passing through the flow-limiting gap, causing high energy release and cavitation explosion, resulting in intense crushing and refinement of the material.

Microfluidizer: It is a device that uses high-pressure microfluidics technology to achieve material homogenization, emulsification, crushing, dispersion and other functions. Its working principle is to pressurize the material to a higher pressure through a high-pressure pump, and then pass the material through a microchannel with a special internal structure (such as "Y" type or "Z" type) at high speed. When the material passes through the microchannel at high speed, the pressure in the fluid drops sharply to form a supersonic flow rate. At this time, particle collision, cavitation, leakage, shearing and other phenomena will occur in the fluid. The material is subjected to high-frequency shearing, impact, material particle inter-emission and huge pressure, which eventually makes the material particle size refined and uniform.

2. The  differences of high pressure homogenizer and microfluidizer

High pressure homogenizers mainly use the high pressure of the pressure system to squeeze, extend, impact, and crush materials, mainly relying on cavitation effect and turbulence effect. The homogenizing valve of the homogenizer is designed with a large clearance and a low homogenizing pressure. It is easy to be damaged when homogenizing high-hardness particles and is difficult to repair. The advantage is that the price is relatively low. High-pressure homogenizers are more suitable for processing soft and semi-soft granular materials.

Microfluidizer use channels of about 100 microns to form supersonic jets. The jets collide with each other and perform extremely strong shearing to obtain higher homogenization pressure and produce better particle size distribution effects. However, its design pressure is high, the flow rate is small, and the cost is relatively high.

3. Application analysis

01.Due to pressure limitations, high pressure homogenizer are more suitable for processing soft and semi-soft granular materials, but are not suitable for high-viscosity materials. The extraction time is short, the process conditions are stable, the resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis is reduced, and the starch digestibility is improved. The high-pressure homogenizer can significantly refine the fat globules in various dairy beverages. When used in the production of ice cream and other products, it can improve the fineness and looseness of the material liquid, prevent or reduce the stratification of the material liquid, and make the taste more mellow.

02. The microfluidizer makes the particles of the medium extremely refined (the average particle size of liquid-liquid homogenization is less than 1). The homogenized product can also obtain the advantages of no sedimentation, high gelatinousness, and high stability, thus making the finished product more The appearance has also been greatly improved, and it is suitable for industries such as new nanomaterials, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, cosmetics, and high-end beverages.

4.how to choose the right homogenizing equipment based on the above analysis?

The following dimensions are for reference:

① Homogenizing pressure: During the homogenizing process, while ensuring that the booster pump is in good condition and the homogenizing chamber is not blocked, whether the actual pressure reached by the treated material can be close to the set pressure, and whether the pressure is stable.

② Processing flow: The processing flow of the equipment is related to factors such as the access voltage, homogenizing pressure, material viscosity or concentration. It should be observed whether the actual processing flow during the demo process is stable and whether it matches its promotional materials.

③ Temperature control: For many temperature-sensitive materials with temperature-affected properties, whether the equipment can monitor the temperature of the inlet and outlet materials in real time, and whether the temperature control effect of its condenser tube can meet the needs, is one of the important functions that cannot be ignored.

④ Continuous operation: A considerable number of high-pressure micro-jet homogenizers need to be shut down for heat dissipation after working continuously for only one hour or even dozens of minutes; when the engine oil temperature is too high, if the equipment can provide cold water circulation access to cool the transmission module, continuous high-pressure homogenization work for more than ten hours is not a problem. Therefore, only examining the processing flow is not enough to measure the actual production capacity.

⑤Pressure display: The way the oil pressure gauge displays the homogenization pressure will inevitably contact the material and produce a certain degree of pollution. At the same time, the accuracy of the oil pressure gauge can only be maintained for a few months, which is a short-lived consumable. More and more manufacturers are beginning to use digital screens to display pressure.

⑥Working noise: Traditional high-pressure homogenizers are powerless to control noise. However, from researchers in precision laboratories to operators in production workshops, long-term exposure to high-noise environments will cause irreversible hearing damage.

⑦Interactive cavity: that is, the homogenization cavity, which can be said to be the most core component of the high-pressure micro-jet homogenizer. Its internal fixed geometric angle structure plays a direct role in the finished product.
